Three cheers for the small but ambitious One Year Lease Theater Company for bringing this terrific 2006 play to local shores, in a vividly acted production at the 9th Space, staged by the company’s artistic director, Ianthe Demos, with a considerable assist from the choreographer Natalie Lomonte and input from the five-member cast.

The dynamic performance brings energy and animation to a text written as a sort of collective monologue, recounting events mostly in the past tense. (None of the play’s living characters are named.) The five first-rate young actors — Estelle Bajou, Christopher Baker, Nick Flint, Christina Bennett Lind and Richard Saudek — move between the first person plural and singular as they recall their evolving relationship with a friend whom they alternately profess to “adore” and furtively criticize.

Though this might sound depressing, Ravenhill’s writing illuminates the humor in knowing how we should react, but not feeling emotionally motivated to do so. As opposed to a writer like Neil LaBute, who has also explored a similar topic in The Shape of Things, Ravenhill’s characters seem more concerned by their lack of emotion, and the tone is altogether more hopeful.

Actors Estelle Bajou, Christopher Baker, Nick Flint, Christina Bennett Lind, and Richard Saudek are all excellent at not only bringing a humanity and honesty to these complex characters, but also at Natalie Lomonte’s choreography. The movement that accompanies the narrative adds to the themes of memory and storytelling, where events take on symbolic aspects, or heightened expression.

One Year Lease Theater Company is set to present the New York premiere of Mark Ravenhill’s pool (no water), May 9-26 at The 9th Space Theatre at PS 122. Ianthe Demos will direct.
pool (no water) was commissioned and co-directed in 2006 by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett. It is a shocking play about the the jealousy and resentment inspired by success.
The cast will include Estelle Bajou, Christopher Baker, Christina Bennett Lind, Nick Flint, and Richard Saudek.
The production features choreography by Natalie Lomont, music by Estelle Bajou, and movement by Christopher Baker. The design team will include James Hunting (set design), Mike Riggs (lighting design), Kay Lee (costume design), and Scott J. Fetterman (multi-media design).

Son of Semele Ensemble has announced casting for things i found on craigslist, which will play as part of the Company Creation Festival, January 14 – February 24. Mary Birnbaum will direct.
In the show, written by Christopher Oscar Peña with music and lyrics by Melissa Lusk, a group of 20-somethings is forced to confront their crippling insecurities and emotional baggage.
The cast will be led by Christina Bennett Lind of All My Children, Rebecca Lawrence of The Kids Are Alright, and Rodney To of Wilfred, and also include Lourdes Avila, Christine Corpuz, Gene Gallerano, Michael Micalizzi, Scott Morse, and Samantha Posey.
